Spade bits are probably the simplest drill bits for drilling in wood. Often used in construction (softwood) with portable drill, they bore holes fast but tend to wobble and vibrate because of their variable geometry. They will get dull faster if you bore in hardwood.
Made of relatively soft steel (high carbon), they are easy to customize; you can create a narrower or a tapered bit and even a special contour. Just file away equal amount on each side of the blade and make sure you restore the original clearance.
This set of classic spade bits will cope with most of your work:
- Large choice of 13 drilling sizes from 1/4″ to 1-1/2″ dia
- Cutting edge point for faster chip removal
- Double cutting spurs scribe the outside of the hole for reduced breakout and cleaner holes
- 1/4″ quick-change shank reduces slipping in standard chucks and is compatible with all 1/4″ quick-change chucks
